The city core runs on I-10, Loop 375 / Border Highway, US-54, Mesa Street, and Montana Avenue. I-10 is the single biggest source of breakdowns and crashes in the metro, and the Downtown bridges and UTEP keep traffic dense day and night. Northwest El Paso is two completely different places joined by one dangerous road. On the I-10 side, the Cimarron master-planned community in the Franklin Mountain foothills is active new construction throughout the 79932 zip code. Young families and military families from Fort Bliss buy here for the space and the mountain views. The Hospitals of Providence Transmountain Campus at 2000 Transmountain Rd, a 106-bed acute care hospital that opened in January 2017, anchors the institutional side of northwest and generates constant traffic on Transmountain Road. The Bear Ridge and La Calavera neighborhoods come off I-10 at Exit 9 and Exit 16, with Redd Road at Exit 9 documented as flood-prone during monsoon events.

Then there is Transmountain Road itself. The Woodrow Bean Transmountain Drive is the northern section of Loop 375, cutting 10 to 11 miles through Franklin Mountains State Park with no traffic signals through the park, steep grades, and sharp curves. There is a runaway truck ramp, but TxDOT engineering analysis found it is positioned too high on the grade to catch trucks that lose control lower down. A cement truck died in a brake-failure crash in 2021. Multiple semitrucks went off the berm in October 2023, one becoming airborne onto I-10 and injuring multiple people. A fatal 18-wheeler crash followed in 2025. Any tow on this road requires winch-equipped recovery equipment and a driver who knows where the dangerous zones are on the descent.

The Upper Valley and Canutillo end of northwest is rural and agricultural, green where the rest of El Paso is beige. Doniphan Drive runs parallel to the Rio Grande from the Westside commercial zone through the pecan orchards and chile fields all the way to Canutillo and toward the New Mexico line. I-10 western exits, especially near Vinton at Exit 2 and Antonio Street at Exit 1, fall in a service gap between El Paso-based towers and New Mexico coverage. We cover this stretch.
